According to a local authority in eastern Congo, rebels with ties to extremist organisations assaulted villages over the weekend, destroying vehicles and stealing goods, murdering at least eleven people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attacks took place on Saturday, and the mayor verified them on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These insurgents have been active for a while in the border area close to Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nearly 200 people have died in the region so far this year, according to a recent UN report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the mayor, Ngongo Mayanga, eleven bodies were found in one region in the commune of Mulekera, spread across four separate locations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulekera is in the province of North Kivu, close to Beni town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, the Eastern Congo has been plagued by conflict as over 120 armed groups vie for control of vital mineral resources, and some try to protect their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to U.N, the violence has made over 7 million people to flee from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
