Uganda\u2019s political stage is heating up ahead of the January 12, 2026<\/strong> presidential election. The country\u2019s Electoral Commission has confirmed receiving 88 applications<\/strong> from individuals seeking to run for the nation\u2019s top seat\u2014a record number in modern history and a potential sign of growing political competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure includes five women<\/strong> and 32 new male contenders<\/strong>, many of them youthful challengers hoping to disrupt Uganda\u2019s entrenched political order. The application process remains in its preliminary stage<\/strong>, with the deadline for picking nomination materials set for August 24<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To qualify, each aspirant must secure signatures from at least 100 registered voters in two-thirds of Uganda\u2019s 98 districts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museveni Still Dominates the Landscape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni<\/strong>, now 80 years old, has ruled since 1986<\/strong> and is widely expected to seek re-election. In June 2025<\/strong>, he picked up his nomination forms, and on July 7<\/strong>, his party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM)<\/strong>, officially endorsed him as their 2026 flagbearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museveni says his focus is steering Uganda toward becoming a \u201chigh upper-middle-income country,\u201d but his long tenure and constitutional changes removing term limits have fueled criticism from opposition figures and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main Opposition Figures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu)<\/strong> \u2013 Leader of the National Unity Platform<\/strong>, the 43-year-old former musician declared in April 2025 that he will contest again despite what he calls an \u201catmosphere of intimidation and repression.\u201d He remains a key voice for Uganda\u2019s youthful population\u2014over 80% of citizens are under 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
