Maliana official on Wednesday issued a decree banning political activities amid calls on the ruling army junta to organize elections.

Goverment spokesman made the news on Wednesday night on state television.

According to Abdoulaye Maiga, the purpose of the political activity prohibition is to uphold public order.

Political party threats to public order were not mentioned in the statement. When the suspension would be lifted was not specified.

The army has ruled Mali since August 2020. Citing technical problems, the junta announced in September of last year that it would not fulfil its commitment to hold elections intended to restore civilian authority this past February.

No new election promises have been made.

After the March transition deadline passed without a vote, many political parties and civil society organisations reacted by demanding elections
