Hellen Obiri Defends Her Boston Marathon Title.

Posted on April 16, 2024April 16, 2024 By Naomy Mbaka No Comments on Hellen Obiri Defends Her Boston Marathon Title.

Kenya’s athlete star Hellen Obiri led a clean sweep for the East African country and won the Boston Marathon for the second consecutive year in 2024 after finishing in a time 2:22:37 on Monday

Despite the close finish, the two-time Olympic silver medallist managed to gain enough distance to win.

Obiri ultimately defeated fellow Kenyan Sharon Lokedi, who raced in 2:22:45, and Edna Kiplagat, who finished in 2:23:21, for third place.

“Defending the title was not easy,” Obiri said.

“Since Boston started, it’s only six women [to have repeated]. So I said, ‘Can I be one of them? If you want to be one of them, you have to work extra hard.’

“And I’m so happy because I’m now one of them. I’m now in the history books in Boston.”

Lokedi and Obiri were essentially tied up until mile 25, when Obiri broke away from the pack.

Last year, Obiri made her Boston Marathon debut, running in 2:21:38.

Obiri 34, is the first woman to win back-to-back Boston’s marathon since Catherine Ndereba in 2005 and sixth overall.
