Trump Threatens 200% Tariff Hike on China Over Rare-Earth Magnet Supply

Posted on August 27, 2025August 27, 2025 By June Wambui No Comments on Trump Threatens 200% Tariff Hike on China Over Rare-Earth Magnet Supply

President Donald Trump has issued a bold warning to Beijing, threatening a 200% tariff hike on Chinese goods if China fails to supply the United States with critical rare-earth magnets.

Rare-earth magnets are vital for U.S. industries, powering everything from electric vehicles and wind turbines to military equipment and smartphones. Trump stressed that America’s reliance on foreign supply chains is a national security risk, vowing to protect U.S. manufacturers by any means necessary.

“If China refuses to cooperate, we will impose a 200% tariff — simple as that,” Trump declared, underscoring his tough stance on trade.

The announcement comes as tensions between Washington and Beijing intensify over technology, energy, and global trade dominance. Analysts say Trump’s move could either force China to make concessions or spark a new wave of trade wars.

For U.S. industries, the stakes are high. Securing a reliable supply of rare-earth magnets is key to maintaining competitiveness in the global economy.
