Bangkok Market Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Including Gunman

Posted on July 28, 2025July 28, 2025 By June Wambui No Comments on Bangkok Market Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Including Gunman

BANGKOK, July 28, 2025 — At least six people, including the gunman, are dead after a shocking mass shooting rocked Or Tor Kor Market in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district on Monday afternoon.

The incident began shortly after 12:38 p.m. local time, when a 61-year-old man entered the bustling food market dressed in black and carrying a backpack. Within moments, he opened fire, killing four security guards and a female vendor before taking his own life inside the market complex.

Another person was reportedly injured and is currently receiving medical attention.

“We are stunned. There was blood everywhere, and people were screaming. It all happened so fast,” said an eyewitness, who requested anonymity for safety reasons.

Suspect Identified, Motive Unclear

Police say the suspect’s identification documents were recovered at the scene, helping confirm his identity and age. Officials have not yet released his name publicly but stated that no prior criminal history has been linked to him so far.

“This appears to be an isolated act of violence, but all angles are being investigated — including possible political or psychological motives,” said Police Lt. Gen. Akaradech Yothanan, head of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

The shooting comes amid growing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, leading authorities to also explore any potential links, though no clear connection has been confirmed.

Or Tor Kor Market Temporarily Closed

The Or Tor Kor Market, a renowned food market known for its high-end produce and tourist footfall, has been closed indefinitely as emergency crews and forensic teams continue to assess the crime scene.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has offered his condolences and promised a full investigation.

“We are mourning with the families affected by this tragedy. Measures are being taken to ensure the safety of our public spaces,” he said in a statement Monday evening.

A Growing Concern

Monday’s attack highlights a troubling trend of gun violence in Thailand. The country has seen a surge in mass shootings in recent years, including the 2020 Korat massacre that left 29 dead.

While the country has relatively strict gun laws, illegal firearms circulation and limited mental health interventions remain key issues.

Victims Confirmed:

  • 4 Market Security Guards
  • 1 Female Vendor
  • 1 Male Gunman (Self-inflicted death)
  • 1 Injured (hospitalized in stable condition)

This story is developing. More updates to follow as police continue investigations.
