Former financial crimes chief Baltasar Ebang Engonga has been sentenced to eight years in prison in Equatorial Guinea for embezzlement.
The Bioko provincial tribunal ruled that Engonga, also known as “Bello”, diverted public travel funds for personal use. The verdict was confirmed by Hilario Mitogo, press director at the Supreme Court.
In addition to the prison term, Baltasar Ebang Engonga must pay a $220,000 fine (about KSh 28.5 million). He and five other senior officials were accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in state money.
A Scandal That Went Global
Baltasar Ebang Engonga made international headlines long before the sentencing. In November 2024, while in pre-trial detention, sex tapes allegedly involving him and wives of other officials leaked online.
The scandal exploded on social media, sparking memes, parody videos, and even a spoof drug named “Balthazariem.” The incident severely damaged his reputation, earning him global notoriety.
Corruption in Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa’s largest oil producers, but the nation is often criticized for corruption and wealth inequality.
For many, the sentencing of Baltasar Ebang Engonga is seen as a rare case of accountability in a system where high-level corruption often goes unpunished. However, critics say the government continues to protect many powerful figures.
Conclusion
The sentencing of Baltasar Ebang Engonga highlights both the deep-rooted corruption in Equatorial Guinea and the unusual ways scandals spread in the digital era. With an eight-year prison term and a hefty fine, his once-powerful career has ended in disgrace.
