Charles Owino Likowa, the speaker of the Migori County Assembly, was impeached by the MCAs after accused of mismanaging House affairs.
59 of the 60 MCAs in attendance on Tuesday afternoon voted in favour of the impeachment resolution.
Deputy Speaker Mathews Chacha is now acting in the capacity of acting Speaker following his removal.
Likowa was accused by the MCAs with poor management of the county assembly and abdicating responsibility for the House’s financial matters.
Led by Majority Leader Ken Ouma, the MCAs said the Speaker has been failing to provide them with their committee allowances for an extended period of time.
Activities in the House have been derailed, according to Ouma, since the Speaker has not managed the county assembly in a way that meets the expectations of the MCAs.
Collins Osewe, the MCA for North Kamagambo, repeated his comments, stating that the County Assembly has not been able to carry out its responsibilities as planned as they have not been able to convene an Assembly committee since December 2023.
He further stated that the Speaker has not been keeping an eye on the MCAs’ well-being.
Acting Speaker Chacha said they’re going to work together henceforth to address the issues that have been ailing the County Assembly.
Likoa’s impeachment comes at a time when he has been battling cases in court challenging his election as the Speaker of the Migori County Assembly.
