Madagascar will play in their first-ever African Nations Championship (CHAN) final on Saturday, where they face Morocco’s Atlas Lions, who are chasing a record-breaking third title.
The island nation sealed their place in the final after a dramatic 116th-minute winner against Sudan in Tuesday’s semi-final at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The victory sparked wild celebrations back home, with fireworks lighting up the night sky in Antananarivo.
Head coach Romuald Rakotondrabe praised his team’s perseverance:
“Our strength lies in unity. The players believed until the very end. This victory belongs to them and to Madagascar,” he said.
Fans on the Move
Madagascar will not be short of support in Nairobi. President Andry Rajoelina announced that the government will cover half of the travel costs for fans heading to Kenya, ensuring “The Bareas” will have strong backing in the stands.
Atlas Lions Await
Their opponents, Morocco, overcame reigning champions Senegal in a tense semi-final. After a 1-1 draw in extra time, the Atlas Lions held their nerve to win 5-3 on penalties. With two CHAN trophies already under their belt, Morocco enters the final as the clear favourite.
Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM on Saturday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Nairobi.
For Madagascar, it will be a chance to write history. For Morocco, it’s an opportunity to cement their dominance in the competition.
