Algeria to hold presidential elections on date 7 September in the year 2024, giving candidates who are vying for the seat 5 months to campaign.

The date was announced in a statement on Thursday by the president after meeting with a group of high ranked members of the parliament.

Tebboune the current president has not officially announced plans to seek re-election as president of the country with 44 million facing economical and political challenges.

Zoubida Assoul of the Union for Change and Progress has announced he will be vying for the presidential seat.

The initial date of elections in Algeria was to be December 2024 however the announcement made took the nation by surprise raising speculation among observers about the rationale change.

The elections in September will be the first since the 78-year-old military-backed leader ascended to power in 2019.

He emerged the winner in a low-turnout election that December in the aftermath of a popular movement that led to his predecessor’s resignation.

Activists and protestors denied the vote and stormed polling stations to protest the election and demand a broader overhaul of the political system.

Algeria is among the 50 countries that are to hold elections in 2024.
