After severe storms and heavy rainfall, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are struggling with the consequences of flooding and landslides. Numerous roads remain closed. What travelers need to know now.

On the first weekend in August, southern Austria, Slovenia and parts of Croatia were hit by severe storms and torrential rain. The consequences were flooding, washed out roads and landslides. The weather has improved significantly, but the traffic disruptions and tourist restrictions are continuing.

Austria

In Austria, the federal states of Carinthia and Styria are mainly affected. In the southeast of Carinthia, in addition to many state roads, the Lavamünd (B80) and Seebergsattel (B82) border crossings are currently closed due to mudslides. In Styria, the situation is particularly tense south of Graz.

Slovenia

In Slovenia, the clean-up work is going on across the country. However, the damage is so serious that restrictions are to be expected for a long time to come. The traffic disruptions are mainly concentrated in the catchment areas of the Sava, Drava and Mura rivers. Not only are a number of road connections impassable here, but also campsites are closed and train connections are interrupted.

The damage around the capital Ljubljana, in the coastal region and in the Alpine region around the Triglav National Park is less serious . According to the Slovenian Tourist Board, a holiday here is possible without any problems.

Croatia

In Croatia, the greatest obstructions are along the Sava River, which also affects traffic in the greater Zagreb area . Landslides and roadblocks are also reported from the Dalmatian hinterland . The situation in the holiday areas on the coasts is less critical. Overall, however, the situation is improving.

According to forecasts , no new storms are expected for the coming days . It could be weeks or months before the cleanup is complete and any road damage is repaired.
